PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Affentaler’s 2022 “Valley of the Monkey” Spätburgunder is a bright, elegant, and expressive German Pinot Noir that balances ripe red fruit with silky texture and refreshing acidity. Charming, polished, and wonderfully drinkable, it reflects the purity and finesse that Baden is known for — a region celebrated for producing some of Germany’s most Burgundian-style reds.
Affentaler Winery, located in Baden’s warm, sunny Rhine Valley, is one of Germany’s oldest winegrowing cooperatives, recognized for its iconic “monkey” branding and long tradition stretching back to the 13th century.
The 2022 Spätburgunder is crafted from hand-selected Pinot Noir grapes grown in the region’s warm, loess- and limestone-rich soils — ideal for nurturing ripe, elegant, fruit-driven expressions of the variety.
Key production details:
Cool fermentation to preserve delicate aromatics
Gentle pressing to maintain finesse and clarity
Aging in stainless steel and neutral oak, adding softness and structure without overwhelming the fruit
Light extraction techniques to highlight purity, red fruit brightness, and Pinot Noir delicacy
This thoughtful approach creates a smooth, refined wine with classic German Pinot Noir lift and charm.
Professional tasters often praise Affentaler’s Spätburgunder for:
Its vibrant red-fruit character, especially cherry, raspberry, and red currant
A silky, soft tannin profile that makes it accessible and versatile
Fresh acidity that adds precision and elegance
Excellent value in the world of cool-climate Pinot Noir
Critics frequently describe this wine as an ideal introduction to German Pinot Noir — balanced, expressive, and pleasantly structured without heaviness.
Nose:
Fresh red cherry, raspberry, and red currant with subtle notes of rose petal, soft spice, and a hint of forest floor. Light touches of vanilla and cocoa emerge with air.
Palate:
Smooth and medium-bodied with lively acidity. Flavors of ripe cherry, strawberry, and cranberry lead, supported by delicate spice, soft tannins, and a gentle earthy note. Elegant, balanced, and refreshing — classic Baden Pinot finesse.
Finish:
Clean, graceful, and lightly spiced. Lingering red fruit and a whisper of minerality leave a bright, lifted impression.
