Martinsancho carries a genuinely remarkable piece of Spanish wine history behind it. Ángel Rodríguez belonged to a family of winegrowers from La Seca with roots dating to 1780, and during the Franco era, he preserved this specific plot of old Verdejo vines as a genuine political statement, at a time when the indigenous variety was at real risk of disappearing from the region entirely. Ángel went on to become one of the founders of Denominación de Origen Rueda, established in 1980, and in 1982 he was awarded the Cruz de la Orden Civil del Mérito Agrícola directly by King Juan Carlos, in formal recognition of his role in single-handedly reestablishing Verdejo's prominence in its own home region. The winery is now run by his daughter, winemaker María Concepción Rodríguez, continuing her father's exact spirit and dedication to the vineyard; her sons, Arturo and Eduardo, have spent long days in the vineyard alongside their grandfather learning traditional goblet pruning, with Eduardo currently pursuing a master's degree in Viticulture and Enology at the University of Montpellier in France. The vineyards were certified organic in 2022.
