"G.E. Massenez Calvados Vieux , an apple brandy with a large apple inside the bottle. Like the proverbial ship in a flagon, we wondered how it got there. The producers attach carafes to the branches and slip the tiny developing apple into the bottle, where it grows to maturity. Certainly eye-catching. And you thought bottles dont grow on trees!
The G.E. Massenez Calvados has been produced using traditional methods with only slight adjustment being made to accommodate the requirements of modern production. The inclusion of a so-called 'Prisoner Apple' in each bottle delivers not only a spectacular visual effect but also helps to enrich the flavor.
Tasting Note: Attractive medium-gold color with aromas of apple-cinnamon, cloves, pie crust, caramel and even hints of yellow pear. Dry with a subtle, elegant apple-cinnamon replay. Chill it slightly and serve it as a digestif, or enjoy it with fresh cinnamon scones or baked apples.
The birth of Distillerie Massenez goes back to the 1870s when Jean-Baptiste Massenez started as home distiller in Urbeis, in the Valle de Vill. Jean-Baptiste Massenez unknowingly opened the way forward for his descendants who would inherit the status of home distiller: his son, Eugene Massenez inherited not only the privilege but also his fathers expertise and went on to become a recognised master distiller himself." - the Distillery
Since 1870, Massenez is specialized in the distillation of fruits. Real pioneer, Eugene Massenez was the first to succeed in distilling Wild Raspberry in 1913, this eau-de-vie was the favorite of the Queen of Sweeden at that time. The third Massenez generation communicated the Massenez savoir-faire all around the world, building an international image for Massenez eaux-de-vie and liqueurs. You can now find them in the most prestigious hotels, restaurants and bars.
