The 2020 Domaine Robert Groffier Gevrey-Chambertin “Les Suvrées” is a compelling expression of classic Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir — harmoniously blending ripe red fruit, refined structure, and savory complexity. Approachable in its youth yet built for graceful evolution, it stands as a polished example of Groffier’s village-level excellence, offering depth and nuance that belie its appellation tier.
Crafted by Domaine Robert Groffier Père & Fils, a revered producer in Gevrey-Chambertin, this wine hails from the Les Suvrées vineyard within the broader Gevrey-Chambertin AOC — one of Burgundy’s esteemed communal appellations in the Côte de Nuits. Les Suvrées yields Pinot Noir that balances fresh red fruit brightness with earthy mineral lift and refined tannic structure, shaped by limestone-rich soils and a classic Burgundian climate.
For the 2020 vintage, Groffier employed thoughtful winemaking choices including the use of approximately one-third whole clusters and no new oak, focusing on purity of fruit and site expression in the ferment and élevage, resulting in an elegant yet layered village bottling.
Vinous (Neal Martin) — 92 points: Praises the wine’s “crisp and precise bouquet” with wilted rose petal aromatics emerging with air, and a medium-bodied palate of crunchy cranberry and strawberry framed by pleasant bitterness on the finish, recommending a few years in bottle to refine its edges.
Wine Spectator — 92 points: Describes the wine as elegant and saturated with sweet ripe cherry and berry fruit, enriched with floral, mineral, tobacco and earthy accents, beautifully balanced and long; approachable immediately but best from about 2024 through 2038.
Jasper Morris (Inside Burgundy) — 93 points: Notes gentle yet expressive strawberry aromas with a savory touch, commendable acidity, persistence, and overall success for a Gevrey-Chambertin village wine.
Nose:
Bright and perfumed with red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petal, and a hint of savory spice, anchored by subtle earthiness and fine mineral tone typical of Gevrey-Chambertin terroir.
Palate:
Medium-bodied, showing crunchy cranberry and ripe berry fruit, enlivened by balanced acidity and gentle spice. The tannins are fine and poised, contributing a refreshing texture, while the savory element deepens the wine’s complexity.
Finish:
Persistence is lively with lingering fruit, mineral accent, and subtle earthiness, leaving a refined impression that encourages further sips and rewards short- to medium-term cellaring.
